Papushnyk is a sweet, fragrant bread made by the Old Slavs according to an ancient recipe for religious holidays, and from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it became the main dish on Ukrainian Easter tables. For the Old Slavs, “papa” means bread, hence the name.
Most time and effort was devoted to its preparation. Papushnyk is always made on a wood-burning stove. Juicy raisins, crispy candied fruits and orange zest are added to the fluffy, tender dough, while vanilla and intoxicating rum with spices give it a slight tartness.
Now every Ukrainian can go back to the old days and have a fragrant, fluffy papushnyk on their own table, recreate ancient traditions and taste the Ukrainian holiday product for Easter.
